Is Popular music the death of Pop-music?

This will, once again be a long rant by me, since I have nothing better to do on a friday night! And yes this header is partly a clickbait, I admitt it. You are free to leave at any given time! (TL;DR at the bottom)

Before I left Sweden for London, I often ended up in small skirmishes with my younger brother about music. He would provoke me by playing the loudest House-tune he could find, and I would run into his room yelling at him that "This is not real music, play something good!". And the battle was on. We were both only partly serious, as I can see that some people like House-music (More than a few actually, just take a look at Avicii, jesus christ).

This will sound like i'm grandpa, yelling at his grandchildren that things were better in the past. Or "Le wrong generation". Przemek (Hi mate, i rek u), will probably not only laugh at this, but he will also disagree wholeheartedly, as I know alot of others will. And that's ok! I want oppinions, that's good for thought.

But the thing is, that as I look through the facebook posts of Sony Music Sweden, one of three major labels still active on the global market, I see nothing of artistic value. Don't get me wrong, there's about 7 billion people out there who are better than me at songwriting, so I wouldn't do it better. The records just sound so fucking bland. There's some great tunes, I'm a huge fan of some of Beyonces tunes, aswell as Gagas, but the majority of it is horseshit polished to look like dogshit.

Interestingly enogh the side of music that the public see, does not reflect the musicians that I know, both young and old. I have met passioned musicians, wanting to develop music, take it forward, explore new things. I think this is also proven by looking at the liveshows of people like Bruno Mars, wich is INCREDIBLE. The music he does, is to me bland on CD (Burn me), but amazing live. Why? Because, he has passionate musicians behind him, doing what they love.

Today I talked to a friend at college, called Jonathan (hi jonathan), and we came up with an anology for writing songs: Remember woodworks in 4th grade? When you would make your own butterknife? And you would polish and polish it, and then all of a sudden it snaps, cause you have polished to far, or the shaft is too thin to actually be usable. Writing a song, is like making a butterknife, polish it too much and the core will wall off. And that's exactly what is happening with popular music today. Turn on the radio and there's a million butterknifes breaking.

Things were not really better before, I mean i'm sure there was shit music in the 70s, but there's a reason we don't hear about it. However, back then the good music was actually brought forward, and not produced like the butterknives. It's like finding a ore of Gold after mining for years, as compared to painting a rock yellow and calling it gold.

What is needed? Some fucking balls. Both from musicians and from labels. Dare to take the gamble of faith, and do something new. Or stay with the current system, and slowly bleed dry from dropping album sales and people finding more reasonable options.

So what else.. Oh yeah, Sweden is crashing and burning appearently, BBC reported in a rather extreme way that " THE SWEDISH GOVERNMENT HAS COLLAPSED". Yeah.. I dunno about that BBC. It's just kids not getting along over some cash they found. It's a fucking hornets nest. Wooppidoo. Still think the king should take control. Long live Carlos Gustavos. Long may he reign.

Until next time guys, I will now go on a few days intense studying for next weeks exams, then Myra will arrive on wednesday, and then come saturday, flight home to the great north! Oh joy!

Tl;DR: Music sucks, labels suck, musicians don't suck, przemek suck, going home soon.
